Bal Gangadhar Tilak, popularly known as Lokmanya Tilak, was born on 23rd July 1856 in Ratnagiri’s Chikhalgaon. This place is nearly 20 km away from Ratnagiri. His house is retained as a tribute to his freedom struggle. The Archaeological Department of the State of Maharashtra has conserved his birthplace as a memorial. There’s a statue of Lokmanya Tilak in the outside premises. The memorial is open for everybody and on all days except Monday.

Tilak family’s holy temple, Lakshmikeshav Mandir, is located nearly 40 km away from Ratnagiri. The temple has a dome-like rooftop with an ancient stone lamp in front. The researchers infer that the idol is Lord Vishnu looking at its structure.
