Kelshi Beach is located towards the northern end of Ratnagiri district and although is located very close to Dapoli, it's not necessary to go through Dapoli to reach Kelshi. Kelshi, in fact, is closer to Mumbai and Pune than Dapoli. From Goregaon on the NH 17, a right turn takes you to Kelshi via Mandangad. Kelshi is approximately 200 Kms from Pune and the distance between Mumbai to Kelshi is about 215 Kms Kelshi Beach - A trip to Kelshi is a perfect weekend getaway from Pune to the rustic charm of Konkan and its serenity. If you want to taste the real village life in Konkan, Kelshi is the ideal place. A place of religious significance, besides having a long history Kelshi also has one of the most beautiful beaches in Dapoli region. Kelshi has a long, scenic, unexplored beach. It is calm and peaceful here with only the sea waves for company. It is about three kilometers in length and ideal for people looking for a break from the maddening city crowds. Along the coast are thick woods and groves of Kevda and Cyprus, coconut and betel nut. A walk on this beautiful beach listening to the ocean waves is really refreshing! It has an endless treasure of conches, shells, and cowries. The large black rocks near the place where the Utambar hill meets the sea are a great place to sit and enjoy the ocean. Located at the base of the Utambar hill, enclosed in a stone wall fortification, this Swayambhu Mahalakshmi temple was built during the Peshwa regime. It also houses the idols of Lord Ganpati and Lord Shiva. Beautiful, fully blossomed lotus flowers in a pond near the temple are an enchanting sight to watch! The sanctum lies beneath two huge domes. You can enter the sanctum through three doors. The dense woods of the hill form a picturesque background. One of the main attractions of Kelshi is a naturally formed sand dune due to the Tsunami. It is located on the southern side of the Bharja river, this sand deposit has been accurately dated to September 1524. Experts and archeologists are carrying out research for samples of ancient culture underneath this dune. Currently, the work of constructing the bridge (a part of the Coastal Highway)across the river Bharja is in full swing. This famous Yaqub Baba Darga is located in Kelshi at a distance of about one kilometer from the Mahalakshmi temple. It has a great historical significance. It is about 386 years old. Many great rulers including Emperor Shivaji, Emperor Sambhaji, and Thorle Bajirao Peshwa have visited Yaqub Baba to take his blessings. The best time to visit Kelshi Beach is from November to February as the weather is mild then and the presence of migratory birds makes the whole surrounding mesmerizing. One feels connected to nature and its awesome beauty. The small white Sandwich Terns and White Gulls hold the attention of the tourists as they stroll along with me. They have a strong calming influence on the visitors.
